Camp Overview:
iCan Shine uses customized adapted equipment, trained professionals and volunteers. With 75 minutes of instruction over 5 days, approximately 80% of riders learn to ride a conventional bicycle independently by the end of camp. The remaining 20% often make great progress towards that goal.
To be eligible to enroll, riders must: be at least eight years old; have a disability; be able to walk without an assistive device such as a walker or cane; be able to side-step quickly to both sides; have a minimum inseam measurement of 20 inches from the floor; and weigh no more than 220 pounds.
Rider Requirements:
• Be at least 8 years old at start of camp
• Have a disability (this camp is also open to riders outside the Down syndrome community)
• Walk without an assistive device (e.g. walker, crutches)
• Be able to side step to both sides (to ensure bike and rider will not fall over when stopping)
• Be willing and able to wear a properly fitted bike helmet
• Be able to attend all 5 days of camp
• Have a minimum inseam of at least 20” (measured from floor to seat height while rider is wearing sneakers)
• Not exceed the weight maximum of 220 lbs (this is a strictly enforced safety and liability concern)
Registration:
Registrants must complete the iCan Bike Registration Form (coming in early Spring) in its entirety and pay the camp fee ($150) before registration can be processed. Submission of this registration and payment does NOT guarantee a spot in the iCan Bike program.
Refund Policy:
Please note, refunds are not available once your registration is confirmed unless there is a waiting list for your session. Refund requests will not be accepted after June 18, 2026, as there will be limited time to fill the spot with another rider.
Interest List:
To be added to the interest list and notified when registration opens, please email Info@downsyndromedallas.org.
INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING?
iCan Bike relies on the assistance of over 40 community volunteers to provide emotional and physical support to camp participants each day. This is a rewarding, hand-ons volunteer experience teaching participants how to ride a two-wheel bicycle.
Volunteer Requirements:
Volunteers must be at least 15 years old.
Volunteers should be physically fit and able to briskly walk and/or run with their assigned rider as required.
Ideally, volunteers will attend all 5 days of camp to ensure riders consistently have the same volunteer. However, people may still volunteer even if they cannot make all 5 days of camp.
We require 2 volunteers per rider, which is especially important on Wednesday and Thursday of camp (days most riders start on two wheels)
Prior experience with individuals with IDD is preferred, but not required. Ongoing training and support is provided.
Volunteers may serve one or multiple sessions per day.
Volunteer Training:
Volunteers will participate in an orientation and hands-on training Sunday, June 22, 2026 at 3:00 pm.
Volunteers will also attend a 15-minute training and debriefing session each day (Monday–Friday) prior to their assigned session start time.
Volunteers should arrive early each day, as training will begin promptly.
Volunteer Questions:
If you have any additional questions about volunteering, please contact Jennifer Ford.
